Apple set to release bigger-screen iPhones
NEW YORK: Apple is planning to release two new versions of its iPhones with larger screens this year to meet competition from rival handset makers, the Wall Street Journalreported Friday.
The report, which follows rumors circulating for several weeks on technology blogs, indicates Apple will come out with the two devices in the second half of 2014.
It said one will have a screen larger than 4.5 inches (11.4 centimeters) diagonally, compared with the four-inch display on current iPhones.
A second model will have a display bigger than five inches, according to the report, which said both would have metal casings.
But Apple will not be using curved displays used by some rivals including Samsung andLG of South Korea.
The news comes amid broad success of large-screen smartphones, sometimes called "phablets" because they combine the features of a phone and tablet computer.
Samsung's Galaxy Note series, with a 5.7-inch display, is one example of a successful phablet.
Juniper Research forecast this week that shipments of phablets will breach 120 million units by the year 2018. An estimated 20 million phablets were shipped last year, according to Juniper.

BlackBerry to bring BBM Voice & Channels on Android and iOS
After BBM for Android and iOS, BlackBerry plans to bring its other renowned features on rival mobile platforms. According to a report by BusinessLine, Blackberry is all set to launch BBM Voiceand BBM Channels on competing platforms. However, there is no word on the exact date of availability.
Late last year, we saw Blackberry introduce its popular messaging service for Android and iOS users. The company later disclosed that it witnessed more than 10 million downloads on the first day itself. The number increased manifold, and BBM was downloaded about 40 million times by the end of 2013. Probably to continue the momentum, the company now plans to bring its other features to the leading mobile platforms.
Let’s quickly brush through BBM Voice and BBM Channels. BBM Voice allows users to call/text anywhere in the world for free over Wi-Fi, provided both have access to BBM Voice. While on a BBM Voice call, users can still respond to BBM messages, check emails or even access other apps. Just like other some messaging services, it shows the BBM Voice icon beside a person’s name to indicate if the person is available.
BBM Channels is a new social networking feature within BBM that takes the sharing experience beyond your friends and acquaintances. It also allows channel creators to generated unlimited number of followers.
After BBM, this is yet another move by BlackBerry to leverage its apps and services market. The company has also tied up with popular local manufacturer Micromax, which means the Canvas series will now come preloaded with the BlackBerry Messenger.
Firstpost also has a BBM Channel. You can follow us on BBM or add us via the pin:C002E13E7.
